A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by its National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, demanding that he stop presenting himself as the party's presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections and publicly apologise to party members.
In a statement released on Monday, the faction insisted that Atiku "is not and has never been the presidential candidate of the ADC" and accused him of making unauthorised statements on behalf of the party. It warned that failure to comply within seven days would leave it with no option but to seek legal redress. The faction further directed Atiku to stop using the party's name, logo and emblem in what it described as the spread of false information. It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise what it called the authentic National Working Committee (NWC) and remove the names of the David Mark-led leadership from its records, citing a court judgment in support of its position.
However, Atiku has maintained that he remains the validly nominated ADC presidential candidate and has dismissed claims challenging the legitimacy of the party's primary election, describing them as deliberate attempts to mislead Nigerians and weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
