The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has supported Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s request for an international investigation into the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the state, saying such a move would help uncover the facts behind the incident and improve efforts against terrorism.
The party, in a statement released on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, said involving international partners would strengthen cooperation in tackling insecurity and would not amount to questioning Nigeria’s authority.
Makinde had on Monday called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping of 45 rescued pupils and teachers who spent 56 days in captivity. The governor made the call while assuming responsibility for their welfare, rehabilitation and return to education.
The children and teachers were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, after armed men attacked three schools in Yawota and Ahoro Esienle communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims included 39 pupils and six teachers.
The governor’s demand for an international review, including possible involvement of the United Nations, has attracted different reactions.
While some Nigerians welcomed the idea, the Senate advised him to be careful with statements that could affect the work of government agencies and security forces handling terrorism and kidnapping cases.
Reacting to the criticism, APM said international cooperation had always been part of Nigeria’s approach to fighting terrorism. The party argued that seeking support from global organisations would help the country gather information and strengthen security measures.
APM said previous administrations, including the current federal government, had requested assistance from foreign partners in areas such as intelligence sharing and security cooperation.
The party also questioned why some political leaders opposed Makinde’s call, saying an investigation aimed at finding the truth should not be viewed as a threat.
APM further accused some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of raising concerns over the probe because of alleged issues involving politicians and criminal groups.
The party called on political leaders and government officials to support efforts aimed at uncovering the facts surrounding the abduction.
The party urged members of the National Assembly and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to focus on finding solutions rather than criticising the governor’s position.
APM also praised security agencies involved in rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers, urging them to continue working towards protecting lives and property across the country.
