Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his recent comment that he would “wrestle his opponents to the finish,” describing the statement as a sign of a government struggling to defend its record.
Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remark in a statement released on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
July 29, 2026, Atiku said the President should focus on tackling the country’s economic challenges rather than engaging in political exchanges with opponents.
He accused Tinubu of using political statements to distract Nigerians from what he described as failures of the administration, including rising living costs, insecurity and economic hardship.
Reacting to Tinubu’s wrestling comment, Atiku said the President should direct his efforts towards solving national problems instead of fighting political rivals.
He said Nigerians were more concerned about issues such as inflation, food prices, the value of the naira, unemployment and insecurity than political confrontations.
Atiku also faulted the timing of Tinubu’s statement, saying it came after a call by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria for credible, peaceful and transparent elections.
The former Vice President said the President’s major challenge was not opposition parties but the performance of his administration, adding that citizens would judge the government based on its actions.
He urged Tinubu to focus on addressing the country’s challenges during the remaining period of his tenure, saying the 2027 election would be decided by voters at polling units rather than political battles.
