Three newly graduated soldiers of the Nigerian Army have reportedly been abducted by suspected bandits in Zamfara State, raising fresh concerns over the persistent insecurity in Nigeria's North-West despite ongoing military offensives against criminal gangs.
The soldiers, who had recently completed their military training, were said to have been travelling through a community in Zamfara when they were intercepted and taken away by heavily armed bandits.Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the victims were on their way to report to their respective duty posts when the attack occurred. Authorities have yet to officially disclose the identities of the abducted personnel.
The incident comes just days after the Nigerian military announced the killing of more than 300 bandits during a major operation in Zamfara State, describing it as one of the most successful offensives against armed criminal groups in recent years.
Security analysts, however, warn that the latest abduction highlights the continued operational capacity of bandit networks despite sustained military pressure.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the kidnapping, while efforts to rescue the abducted soldiers were reportedly ongoing.
The incident underscores the enduring security challenges confronting the region and the risks faced by both civilians and security personnel operating in bandit-prone areas.
