The Federal Government has announced that members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will soon wear Adire fabric instead of the traditional khaki uniform as part of major reforms approved for the 53-year-old scheme.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the development on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television's The Morning Brief.
According to the minister, the new Adire uniform will be produced locally to support Nigerian textile manufacturers and boost the country's economy.
"It's Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun; we have them in Kwara; we have textile industries. Let's put our money back into the country," Olawande said.
The announcement comes days after the Federal Executive Council approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps, marking the first major overhaul of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.
As part of the reforms, corps members will also be posted based on their academic qualifications and career paths rather than the existing general deployment system.
Olawande explained that graduates trained as teachers, for example, would undergo relevant orientation camp training before being deployed to schools that match their professional background.
"After leaving camp, you are not just posted to a school because NYSC wants you there but because of the process you followed in camp. That will determine where you are posted," he said.
