FIFA Appoints American Referee For England Vs Argentina World Cup Semi-Final.

FIFA has appointed American referee Ismail Elfath to officiate Wednesday's 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina.

The 44-year-old official has already taken charge of three matches at the tournament, including Japan's clash with the Netherlands, Uruguay's meeting with Spain and Brazil's encounter with Norway.

Across those matches, Elfath has issued six yellow cards and one red card, with Uruguay's Agustín Canobbio being the only player sent off by the American referee so far.

FIFA confirmed that Elfath will be assisted by fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins for the highly anticipated encounter.

His appointment makes him the second referee from the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) to be selected for a World Cup semi-final after El Salvador's Ivan Barton was chosen to oversee Tuesday's semi-final between France and Spain in Arlington, Texas.

Argentina booked their place in the last four after a series of impressive performances in the knockout stages.

The defending world champions defeated Cape Verde 3-2 in the Round of 32, edged past Egypt by the same scoreline in the Round of 16 and overcame Switzerland 3-1 in the quarter-finals.

England have also enjoyed an impressive run to the semi-finals, defeating DR Congo 2-1 in the Round of 32, overcoming Mexico 3-2 in the Round of 16 and beating Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Wednesday's encounter will mark the first meeting between England and Argentina since 2005 and their first World Cup clash since the 2002 tournament.

The fixture is expected to renew one of international football's most historic rivalries, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.
