Four family members linked to terrorist groups have surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI after fleeing an insurgent enclave in the Mandara Mountains of Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State.
According to intelligence sources cited by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the individuals surrendered at about 8:30 a.m. on 10 July to troops of C Company, 192 Battalion (Mechanised), deployed in Gwoza.
The group comprised two women, a teenager and an infant who reportedly escaped from the Kunde terrorist enclave, one of the remaining hideouts used by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in the Mandara Mountains.
The surrendered individuals were identified as Hauwa Muhammadu, 40; Aisha Muhammadu, 22; Adamu Muhammadu, 15; and 10-month-old Muhammad Mustapha.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the family fled the enclave due to sustained military operations targeting terrorist positions, as well as deteriorating humanitarian conditions within the camp.
According to military sources, the family told investigators that continuous offensives by security forces, combined with severe shortages of food and other basic necessities, made survival in the enclave increasingly difficult, forcing them to escape.
During the screening process, troops reportedly recovered a total of ₦32,100 from the family.
Military sources said the four individuals have been screened and documented in line with established procedures and are currently in the custody of the 192 Battalion for further profiling and appropriate administrative action.
Security sources added that ongoing ground and air offensives under Operation HADIN KAI have continued to weaken terrorist strongholds across the Mandara Mountains and the Sambisa axis, leading to a growing number of escapes and voluntary surrenders by family members and other individuals previously living in insurgent-controlled enclaves.
