The fourth batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived in the country, with 282 returnees landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Friday, 10 July.
The evacuees arrived aboard a chartered Air Peace flight as part of the Federal Government's ongoing repatriation exercise for Nigerians affected by renewed anti-immigrant protests in South Africa.
With the arrival of the latest batch, the total number of Nigerians repatriated since the evacuation exercise began on 11 June has risen to 1,141.
Authorities had earlier disclosed that more than 1,000 Nigerians expressed interest in returning home amid growing concerns over xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant demonstrations in parts of South Africa.
The evacuation programme was initiated to ensure the safe return of affected Nigerians who chose to leave the country following the resurgence of tensions targeting foreign nationals.
Officials also confirmed that the final batch of evacuees is expected to arrive in Nigeria next week, bringing the repatriation exercise to a close.
The Federal Government has continued to assure Nigerians abroad of its commitment to protecting their welfare and providing support during periods of crisis.
