Iyabo Obasanjo Explains Why She Left APC.

Former senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has explained that she resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) because the party's consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State allegedly failed to fulfil promises made to her and her supporters.

Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Show, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo said her decision to leave the ruling party came after she became disappointed with how events unfolded after the party's governorship primary process.

According to her, the candidate did not keep the commitments that had been made to her camp, leaving her feeling frustrated. She said her resignation from the APC was a result of the broken promises and the disappointment that followed.

Her remarks came shortly after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State formally welcomed her into its fold following her exit from the APC.

Iyabo returned to active politics in January 2026 after spending about 15 years away from the political scene. Upon her return, she joined the APC and declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election.

However, her ambition ended after she failed to secure the party's governorship ticket. On May 31, 2026, she announced her resignation from the APC, accusing the party leadership of treating her unfairly and failing to show her respect during the process.

Her latest explanation provides more details about the reason behind her departure, as she maintained that the failure to honour agreements reached with her group was the main factor that pushed her out of the party.

Her move to the PDP has added a new twist to the political landscape in Ogun State as preparations for the 2027 general election continue.

For the APC, her exit has renewed discussions about how the party manages aspirants who lose internal contests. On the other hand, the PDP sees her arrival as a boost, considering her political background and public profile ahead of the next governorship race.
