Kanyinsola Ajayi Equals Nigerian Record To Win 100m At Prefontaine Classic.

Nigerian sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi produced a brilliant performance on Saturday to win the men's 100 metres at the 2026 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, defeating a star-studded field that included reigning world champion Oblique Seville.

The 21-year-old clocked an impressive 9.84 seconds to equal his own Nigerian national record in his Diamond League debut at the iconic Hayward Field.

Ajayi delivered a composed race, surging past Seville after the opening stages to secure a memorable victory. The Jamaican finished second in 9.89 seconds, while American sprinter Christian Coleman claimed third place in 9.95 seconds. Kenneth Bednarek of the United States finished fourth with a time of 9.96 seconds.

Although Seville got off to the better start, Ajayi accelerated strongly after the 30-metre mark and maintained his lead through the finish, crossing the line first with a legal tailwind of +0.1m/s.

Reacting to the victory, the Nigerian star said the performance was the result of his determination to remain consistent throughout the season.

“I feel good. I've been consistent. That was part of my goal. Stay on top of it all, stay consistent, come out here and do what I have to do and just execute my race. So I feel good about that,” Ajayi said after the race.

The victory caps an outstanding season for the young sprinter, who has already claimed both the NCAA men's 60 metres indoor title and the 100 metres outdoor championship.

Earlier this year, Ajayi won the NCAA outdoor 100m title in a wind-assisted 9.72 seconds, a performance that placed him joint sixth on the all-conditions list of the fastest men's 100m performers in history alongside Jamaican great Asafa Powell.

Only Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, Yohan Blake, Obadele Thompson and Andre De Grasse have recorded faster performances under all conditions.
