Nigerian Re. Fr. Benjamin Okwy Madu, Dies In Massachusetts Weeks Before Planned Return To Nigeria.

Catholics in Massachusetts are mourning the death of Nigerian-born priest, Rev. Benjamin Okwy Madu, popularly known as Father Ben, who died just weeks before he was scheduled to return to Nigeria following the expiration of his US visa.

Father Ben died on Thursday, July 2, at the age of 54 after serving Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish for more than four years.

His death was announced in a message to parishioners by the pastor of the two parishes, Rev. James M. Achadinha, who described him as a devoted priest whose ministry touched many lives.

According to Achadinha, Father Ben had served in the Catholic priesthood for nearly 25 years. In addition to his parish duties, he also ministered as a chaplain at Salem Hospital.

The Archdiocese of Boston said Father Ben's visa was due to expire later in July, and he had been preparing to leave the United States after being directed by his bishop in the Diocese of Abakaliki, Nigeria, to return home earlier than originally planned.

Before his death, Father Ben had informed parishioners that his ministry in Massachusetts would soon come to an end as he prepared to return to Nigeria.

Members of the Archdiocese of Boston and parishioners had reportedly petitioned authorities and worked with immigration attorneys in an effort to allow him to remain in the United States. However, those efforts were unsuccessful before his death.

His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from members of the Catholic community, who remembered him for his dedication to pastoral service, compassion, and commitment to the faithful.

Further details regarding the cause of his death and funeral arrangements had not been announced as of the time of filing this report.
