The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, 29 July 2026.
According to the statement, Jinlian was arrested by operatives of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Abuja on 18 July 2026 following credible intelligence.
The police said Jinlian is accused of masterminding the illegal shipment of two consignments of tree pangolin scales from Nigeria to China between November 2018 and April 2019.
The statement said investigations by the Anti-Smuggling Sub Bureau of Wenzhou Customs led to the conviction of two of Jinlian’s accomplices, who were sentenced to more than 14 years’ imprisonment by the Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court of Zhejiang Province in December 2020.
Jinlian allegedly fled China for Egypt on 12 July 2019, before an arrest warrant was issued against him on 24 March 2020. An INTERPOL Red Notice was subsequently published on 10 May 2020.
The police said intelligence later revealed that Jinlian had relocated to Nigeria around 2023 and moved between Delta and Plateau States before his arrest in Abuja.
The statement read: "Jinlian is wanted for smuggling approximately 12 tonnes of tree pangolin scales from Nigeria into China in two consignments between November 2018 and April 2019, following investigations by the Anti-Smuggling Sub Bureau of Wenzhou Customs."
It added that the suspect was repatriated to Shanghai on 29 July 2026 under bilateral police cooperation arrangements to face the pending charges.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olutunji Rilwan Disu, commended the INTERPOL NCB Abuja team for what he described as a successful operation and urged the Environmental Crimes and Works of Art Team to intensify intelligence-led efforts against wildlife trafficking and other forms of transnational organised crime.
Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening international law enforcement cooperation through INTERPOL and other strategic partnerships to combat cross-border crime and protect endangered wildlife.
