The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2027 election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) decision to field President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 election.
Adebayo said the arrangement was used to appeal to religious sentiments rather than focusing on leadership qualities, competence and the ability to solve Nigeria’s problems.
The SDP candidate made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he argued that Nigerians preparing for the 2027 election were more interested in good leadership than the religion of political office holders.
He described the Tinubu-Shettima combination as ineffective from the perspective of many Muslims, saying the principles of Islamic leadership are based on justice, fairness and the ability of a leader to serve the people.
Adebayo explained that religion alone should not determine who gets public office, adding that leaders should be chosen based on their ability and character.
He said Muslims who participate in politics do so with the aim of creating a fair society and ensuring that responsibilities are given to people who are qualified to handle them.
The SDP candidate claimed that the idea of a Muslim-Muslim ticket was introduced as a political move to gain support from voters by using religious identity.
He added that Nigerians across different regions were searching for a leader who could deliver justice and improve their lives regardless of the person’s faith.
Adebayo also criticised the current administration, saying the country’s challenges have continued despite the religious background of the president and vice president.
He referred to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who supported the Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 election, saying recent events involving El-Rufai and his family showed that justice remained a major concern in the country.
The SDP presidential hopeful maintained that the major issues facing Nigerians are poor living conditions, insecurity and the need for better governance, rather than the religious identity of elected leaders.
