The Head of WAEC Nigeria, Dr Josiah Dangut, announced the results in Lagos, stating that the figure represented 61.54 per cent of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat the examination.
The performance represents a slight decline from the 2025 WASSCE, when 1,239,884 candidates, or 62.96 per cent, achieved credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
Dangut disclosed that results for 1,834,695 candidates, representing 94.05 per cent of the total candidates, had been processed and released, while the results of 116,031 candidates, or 5.95 per cent, were still being processed.
He also revealed that 1,213 candidates with special needs registered for the examination. They included 137 visually impaired candidates, 491 candidates with hearing impairments, 55 spastic and mentally challenged candidates, and 41 physically challenged candidates.
Meanwhile, WAEC withheld the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of those who sat the examination, over alleged examination malpractice.
Although the figure remains substantial, Dangut said it represented an improvement compared with the 9.7 per cent recorded in 2025.
He attributed the malpractice cases to the continued use of mobile phones in examination halls despite the existing ban, as well as organised cheating in some schools.
“The increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall, in spite of the existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools are other nagging issues,” Dangut said.
He added that WAEC had arrested some supervisors and invigilators allegedly involved in facilitating examination malpractice.
According to him, the affected officials would face disciplinary action through the relevant state ministries of education.
