Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has said President Bola Tinubu should not serve as chairman of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections.
Ndume made the comment on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he discussed the structure of the APC’s campaign ahead of the elections.
The senator argued that Tinubu, as the presidential candidate and the person being presented to Nigerians by the APC, should focus on his role as the party’s candidate rather than lead the campaign council.
According to Ndume, the responsibility of coordinating the presidential campaign should rest primarily with the APC leadership, particularly the party’s national chairman.
“If I had the ear of Mr President, he does not need to be the Presidential Campaign Council chairman. What is the party doing?” Ndume said.
He also proposed that APC governors should take charge of the presidential campaign in their respective states, with a central coordinating team overseeing their activities.
“The governors of every state should head the presidential campaign in their respective states, and there should be a coordinating team to coordinate them,” he added.
Ndume’s position comes after Tinubu recently constituted his Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 election and appointed himself as its chairman.
The senator’s comments suggest that he believes the APC’s party structure should play a more prominent role in organising and coordinating the campaign rather than leaving the responsibility directly with the president.
