The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 500-level student of Fr Moses Adasu University, formerly known as Benue State University, for allegedly attacking her roommate with hot water.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026, following a disagreement between the two female students who were living together.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, August 29, saying an investigation had commenced to determine the circumstances that led to the altercation.
According to Aondongu, the suspect allegedly boiled water, added salt and pepper, poured the mixture on the victim and locked her inside the room.
“From the information I have, both students were staying in the same room and had an issue. The suspect allegedly boiled water, added salt and pepper, and poured the mixture on the victim and then locked her inside,” he said.
He added that people later became aware of the incident and intervened, rescuing the victim before taking her to hospital for treatment.
The suspect was subsequently arrested by the police.
“I don’t have much information yet about the genesis of the disagreement or what led to the incident, but I can confirm that the incident happened. I also understand that both of them are students of the Benue State University,” the police spokesperson said.
The Students’ Union President, Akighirga Vitalis, who visited the victim at the hospital alongside members of his executive, said the victim, identified as Rose, explained that a disagreement with the suspect, Felicia, had escalated into the alleged attack.
Vitalis said the two students had previously lived together before personal disagreements began to affect their relationship.
Describing the incident as shocking, the Students’ Union president condemned the alleged assault as “a grave and unacceptable assault on the life and well-being of a fellow student”.
“We are deeply concerned about this incident. The Students’ Union will follow this matter closely until justice prevails,” he said.
He assured students that the union would engage with relevant authorities and monitor the police investigation, as well as any disciplinary proceedings that may follow.
Vitalis added that if the allegations against the suspect are established through due process, the union would support appropriate sanctions under the university’s regulations, including expulsion where warranted.
“The Students’ Union will not condone violence or any conduct capable of endangering the life of another student,” he added.
