The development comes after restrictions on the operations of Uber, Bolt and other ride-hailing platforms at airports sparked complaints from passengers.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 27, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the disagreement stemmed from longstanding concerns over safety, security and accountability involving commercial and e-hailing vehicles operating at airports.
According to the authority, some of the concerns included unregulated pick-ups and passenger solicitation, as well as cases involving drivers operating across multiple ride-hailing platforms.
FAAN said the concerns led to the introduction of the Airport Car Hire Management System, ACHRAMS, stressing that the system was not designed to compete with Bolt, Uber or other mobility platforms.
The authority also rejected claims that it controls airport transport fares, stating that the rates existed independently before the introduction of the management system.
FAAN explained that ACHRAMS merely made the existing fares more visible to passengers, leading to increased scrutiny when compared with the generally lower prices offered by e-hailing services.
“We sincerely apologise for the difficulties this caused our passengers,” Agbebire said, adding that the authority had listened to public concerns and made the necessary adjustments.
FAAN said it remains in discussions with other e-hailing operators and expects the talks to be concluded in the coming days.
The authority maintained that its actions were driven by safety, security and regulatory considerations rather than commercial interests, insisting that it had no intention of creating a monopoly over airport transportation.
FAAN also apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption and thanked them for their patience and understanding.
