The President has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately seek the reversal of a court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, citing concerns over the timing of the action ahead of the state's governorship election.
In a statement, the President said he had become aware that the EFCC obtained the court order on 5 August 2026. While stressing that he was not opposed to the commission carrying out its statutory responsibilities, he said he was "deeply embarrassed" by the timing of the action, noting that decisions taken by federal institutions are often attributed to the Presidency, regardless of whether he had prior knowledge of them.
The President reiterated his commitment to preserving the independence of anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, stating that since assuming office he had deliberately refrained from interfering in the operational activities of the EFCC and other investigative bodies. He maintained that democratic institutions must be allowed to perform their duties professionally, independently and in accordance with the law, free from political interference.
However, he said he was concerned that the freezing of the Osun State Government's accounts so close to the forthcoming governorship election could create the perception that a federal agency was being used to influence the electoral process.
Although he said he had yet to receive a full briefing on the circumstances that led the EFCC to seek the court order, the President described the timing of the move as "inauspicious" and said the public interest required his intervention to safeguard confidence in the democratic process.
He therefore directed the EFCC to return to court immediately to apply for the order to be vacated and to discontinue all related legal proceedings against the Osun State Government.
According to the President, the directive is intended to preserve public confidence in the integrity, credibility and fairness of the forthcoming governorship election and to ensure that no action by a federal institution undermines trust in the democratic process.
