Fr Bassey shared the story in a post on X, explaining that the woman, who was her father's only daughter, had reportedly abandoned her job to care for him for more than a year as his health deteriorated.
According to the priest, the elderly man, believing that he might soon die, called his daughter and asked for her forgiveness.
However, the reason for his plea reportedly left the woman devastated.
Fr Bassey said the man allegedly confessed that he had sexually abused his two granddaughters when they were about 10 and eight years old.
The revelation reportedly left the woman shocked, disappointed and deeply distressed, with thoughts of revenge crossing her mind.
According to the priest, she wished her father was physically strong enough to be handed over to the police, but said her fear of God stopped her from taking action.
“How can a granddad do that to his grandkids!” she reportedly lamented.
The woman was also said to have remembered that her eldest daughter had attempted to say something about the alleged abuse years earlier.
However, she reportedly struggled to believe that such an act could have been committed by her own father and did not pursue the matter at the time.
The alleged confession has now reportedly left her overwhelmed with guilt and regret, as she blamed herself for not recognising the signs when her daughter first attempted to speak out.
Fr Bassey’s post has drawn attention to the importance of listening carefully to children and taking allegations or concerns about abuse seriously, regardless of the identity or relationship of the alleged perpetrator.
