At least 10 residents have been abducted and an Islamic teacher killed following an attack by suspected bandits on Gidan Kare village in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The attack occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after residents reportedly returned from Tureta town, where many villagers had been spending the night due to persistent insecurity in the area.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers entered the community at about 8am and opened fire on residents.
According to him, one person was killed, another was injured, while at least 10 others were taken away by the attackers.
The victim who was killed was identified as an Islamic teacher, Mallam Abubakar Danjimme, while the injured resident was identified as Dan Abu.
Those reportedly abducted include Mallam Dan Manga, Shehu, twin sisters Hassana and Hussaina, Badaru, two children of Mallam Ayuba, Saratu and two others.
Residents said people from Gidan Kare had adopted the practice of sleeping in Tureta town and returning to their homes in the morning in an effort to avoid attacks by armed groups.
However, the attackers were said to have taken advantage of the routine, allegedly hiding in a primary school within the village before emerging after several residents had returned home.
A resident of Tureta, who accommodates displaced villagers, said the gunmen appeared to have monitored the movement of the residents before carrying out the attack.
The attackers reportedly also entered nearby Daddade and Janwake communities but found them largely deserted after many residents fled their homes over fears of further attacks.
Residents of the affected communities have appealed to the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle the insecurity and prevent armed groups from operating freely in the area.
