Defence Minister Urges Nigerians To Respect Petty Traders, Shares Mother’s Story.

 

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has urged Nigerians to respect petty traders, stressing that there is dignity in every form of honest work, regardless of the size of the business.Musa made the remarks in Abuja during an event organised for widows and wives of military personnel, where he encouraged beneficiaries to value their efforts and means of livelihood.

Sharing his personal experience, the minister revealed that his mother supported their family through the sale of the popular Nigerian staple, akara and akamu, while also complementing his father’s efforts.

According to Musa, his mother’s determination and commitment to small-scale trading played a significant role in improving the family’s circumstances and contributed to his journey into public service.

He said no honest means of earning a living should be considered inferior, adding that many successful individuals have benefited from the sacrifices of parents and guardians who engaged in humble businesses.

The minister also reflected on the criticism that followed First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s decision to provide financial assistance to akara sellers and other petty traders through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

Musa said he was surprised by some of the reactions to the support programme, noting that small businesses often provide vital support for families.

“A few weeks ago, the First Lady, the mother of the nation, contributed some amount for akara sellers and others, and I was surprised when I heard the responses from citizens,” he said.

“Standing here today as the Minister of Defence, my mother sold akamu. It is with that akamu that supported my mother to where I am today.”

The minister expressed gratitude for his mother’s sacrifices, saying her willingness to engage in petty trading helped shape his future.

“I am very proud that my mother supported my father by selling akara and akamu. Don’t let anybody make you feel that selling akara and akamu is below standard,” Musa added.

He encouraged Nigerians to recognise the value of honest labour and show greater appreciation for small-scale entrepreneurs who contribute to the economy and support their families.
