The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, days after he was removed from the leadership of the legislature.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, had earlier been removed as Speaker during the ongoing crisis in the House.
On August 17, 2026, Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo 1 Constituency, was elected as his replacement.
The lawmakers later suspended Agbebaku indefinitely, while also making changes to other leadership positions in the Assembly.
Jonathan Ibhamawu, who represented Esan West Constituency, was removed as Majority Leader and replaced by Ojiezele Osezua Sunday of Esan South-East Constituency.
Addeh Emankhu Isibor, representing Esan North-East 1, was also removed as Deputy Majority Leader and replaced by Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene from Igueben Constituency.
However, the House took another step on Monday, August 24, by converting Agbebaku’s earlier resignation from the Speakership into a formal impeachment.
The new Speaker, Yekini Idaiye, said the impeachment process had the backing of 17 lawmakers.
According to him, the impeachment notice had been presented during an earlier plenary session by the Majority Leader.
Idaiye said the decision followed the failure to formally present and document Agbebaku’s resignation notice after he was suspended.
The House therefore treated the matter as an impeachment rather than accepting the resignation as the basis for his removal.
The motion for the impeachment was moved by Sunny Ojiezele, the Majority Leader, and supported by Ahmed Waziri, who represents Etsako Central Constituency.
Following the decision, the Assembly directed Agbebaku to return any government property still in his possession. The House also warned that security agencies could be brought into the matter if he failed to comply with the directive or respond to the lawmakers.
The development adds another chapter to the leadership dispute that has continued to create tension within the Edo State House of Assembly.
