Edo Records Over 70 Defilement Cases In Seven Months, Fathers Linked To Half.

The Edo State Government has disclosed that more than 70 cases of child defilement were recorded across the state between January and July 2026, with fathers allegedly responsible for about half of the cases.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, disclosed this on Thursday, August 13, while highlighting concerns over sexual abuse involving vulnerable children.

According to the commissioner, minors allegedly defiled by their fathers were mostly between the ages of two and 10.

She also revealed a disturbing case involving a 14-year-old girl who is currently eight months pregnant after allegedly being impregnated by her father.

“Mostly, 50 per cent are abused by their own fathers, with the victims ranging from two to 10 years. For instance, there is a little girl currently in our custody who was impregnated by her father. She is just 14 years old and is eight months pregnant as we speak. The case was reported to us by a neighbour,” Abdallah said.

The commissioner said the teenager initially claimed that her father was dead and pleaded with officials not to have him arrested.

However, she noted that the girl remained the only person who could provide information on her father’s whereabouts.

Abdallah stressed the state government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens and ensuring that survivors of abuse receive the necessary support.

She said the government was working towards ensuring that survivors were not only heard but adequately supported, while women and other vulnerable groups were provided with opportunities for economic empowerment.

“That survivors are not merely heard but supported; that women are not merely trained but provided opportunities for economic advancement; and that social-protection programmes increasingly produce measurable outcomes,” she added.
