Two herders have been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over allegations of unlawful grazing in Ekiti State.
The defendants, Shehu Umaru, 40, and Muhammadu Riskua, 30, whose addresses were not provided, were alleged to have committed the offence on August 11 at about 2:00 p.m. in Itapaji-Ekiti.
The prosecutor, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court on August 17 that the defendants allegedly grazed their cattle on an unauthorised farmland located in the Itapaji-Ekiti forest area.
According to the prosecutor, the alleged offence contravenes Section 2 and is punishable under Section 7 of the Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminant Grazing in Ekiti State Law, 2016.
Oriyomi urged the court to adjourn the case to enable the prosecution to study the case file and assemble its witnesses.
However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Their counsel, Mr Gboyega Abiola, applied for their bail, assuring the court that they would not abscond.
In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendants bail in the sum of ₦50,000 each, with one surety each in like sum.
The case was subsequently adjourned until September 14 for hearing.
