Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, has explained that his recent call to “kill Accord” was a political statement urging voters to defeat the party at the polls and not a call for violence.
The senator came under criticism after a video showing him speaking in Yoruba to supporters in Ilesa circulated widely on social media.
In the video, Fadahunsi accused members of the Accord Party of attacking members of the All Progressives Congress and appeared to urge APC supporters to confront Accord supporters in the area.
He also challenged those at the gathering to record his remarks and post them online.
The incident reportedly occurred while he was addressing APC supporters ahead of the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election.
However, his media office, in a statement issued in Osogbo on Tuesday, said the senator’s use of the phrase was political and metaphorical.
The statement explained that Fadahunsi was asking APC supporters to defeat the Accord Party through votes during the election rather than through any physical confrontation.
It said the senator did not intend to encourage attacks, intimidation or violence against Accord members or supporters.
The media office further stated that Fadahunsi had consistently supported the use of democratic processes to determine electoral outcomes, adding that political differences should not result in violence.
The senator also called on APC members, other political parties and voters to maintain peace before, during and after the election.
He urged security agencies to act professionally and provide an environment where eligible voters could cast their ballots without fear or intimidation.
According to the statement, Fadahunsi remains committed to democratic values, peaceful campaigns and a credible electoral process in which the choice of voters determines the winner.
The senator’s office also appealed to members of the public to avoid misinterpreting his remarks, insisting that the statement was meant to encourage the political defeat of Accord through votes.
The clarification came after the campaign council of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to investigate the senator’s comments and take appropriate action over what it described as a threat against Accord Party members.
