The Federal Government has provided Benue State with 100 vials of Panaf Premium Anti-Snake Venom worth more than N25 million to help treat victims of snakebites and reduce deaths linked to the attacks.
The donation was made by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare following recent reports of snakebite-related deaths in different parts of the state.
The intervention is also expected to reduce the financial pressure faced by victims and their families, especially because of the high cost of anti-snake venom.
The consignment was officially presented on Friday at the Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services headquarters in Makurdi.
Speaking during the presentation, the state Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Paul Ogwuche, said the donation was part of efforts to strengthen the state's response to snakebite cases and provide faster access to treatment.
Ogwuche thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for his continued support for the health sector and praised the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Aliu Pate, as well as the Federal Ministry of Health for responding to the state's request for assistance.
He said the anti-snake venom would help make treatment more affordable for affected families and improve the chances of victims receiving medical attention without delay.
The commissioner also assured residents that the ministry would put measures in place to ensure the drugs are properly recorded, stored and distributed. He said the supply would be carefully managed so that patients who need the medicine can have access to it.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Cephas Hough, who received the donation, thanked the Federal Ministry of Health for the assistance. He said the supply would improve the state's ability to manage snakebite cases and reduce the burden on residents seeking treatment.
Hough also praised Ogwuche for engaging with the Federal Ministry, which led to the donation being secured for Benue.
The consignment was later handed over to the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Regina Agir, for proper documentation, storage and management according to approved pharmaceutical procedures.
Senior officials and directors of the Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services were present during the handover.
