Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his sons, although he did not disclose which son was allegedly targeted or provide details about when or how the reported plot took place.
Netanyahu made the claim on Monday during a phone interview with Israel’s Channel 14 while discussing security arrangements for senior Israeli figures. His remarks came as attention focused on reports that Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet, had refused to provide round-the-clock protection for former army chief Gadi Eisenkot.
Eisenkot is currently involved in Israel’s political race and is reportedly competing closely with Netanyahu ahead of the October 27 election. Netanyahu said he believed Eisenkot should receive continuous security protection because of the threats facing prominent Israeli figures.
The prime minister said the issue of security should not be treated as an optional benefit, pointing to what he described as Iran’s previous attempt to target one of his children.
Netanyahu has three children, including two sons and a daughter. However, he did not identify which of his sons was allegedly the subject of the reported assassination attempt.
His elder son, Yair Netanyahu, 35, has spent long periods in Miami, United States, since early 2024. Reports have previously stated that he has received security protection from Shin Bet while staying abroad.
Yair’s stay in the United States has generated debate in Israel, particularly over the public cost of providing security for him outside the country.
Some people in South Florida have also raised concerns that his presence could increase the risk of the area being targeted by groups hostile to Israel.
The latest claim by Netanyahu has added a new security issue to the political debate in Israel, coming at a time when the country remains concerned about threats from Iran and other hostile groups.
Shortly after Netanyahu made the allegation public on Monday, Israeli journalist Amit Segal reported on his Telegram channel that information about the alleged attempt had been known for several months.
Segal also indicated that publication of details surrounding the matter had previously been restricted by a court-imposed gag order, meaning information about the reported incident could not be publicly discussed.
Netanyahu did not give further information about the alleged Iranian operation, including when it happened, which of his sons was involved or whether any arrests had been made in connection with the claim.
