A 30-year-old Italy-based businessman, Joseph Cyril, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu for allegedly ingesting 98 wraps of cocaine.Cyril was arrested at the airport’s departure hall on Sunday, 2 August, during the outward clearance of passengers on an Ethiopian Airlines flight, ET930, bound for Italy via Addis Ababa and France, according to the NDLEA.
He was subsequently placed under excretion observation, during which he expelled 98 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.510kg, the agency said.
The NDLEA said its investigation showed that Cyril had arrived in Nigeria from Italy on 13 July and allegedly ingested the cocaine at a hotel in Awka, Anambra State, before travelling to Enugu to board his flight to Europe.
In his statement, the suspect reportedly said he had been doing business in Italy for several years before agreeing to traffic the consignment in exchange for €3,500.
He allegedly told investigators that he intended to use the money to raise funds to relocate to Germany, where his family is based.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives in Lagos also intercepted 25 phone chargers allegedly destined for Saudi Arabia at a courier company.
The agency said officers at another logistics company in Lagos on Monday, 3 August, also thwarted an attempt to send 500 grams of cocaine to Italy. The drug was allegedly concealed in the false bottom of a backpack.
On Tuesday, 4 August, NDLEA operatives at another shipping company in Lagos intercepted a consignment containing 2.3kg of Loud, a potent synthetic strain of cannabis, which had arrived from the United States.
The NDLEA said investigations into the seizures and arrests were ongoing.
