The All Progressives Congress in Kwara State has suffered a fresh setback following the resignation of 12 executive members in Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area.
The ward officials resigned from both their positions and membership of the APC shortly after the departure of Senator Saliu Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central in the National Assembly.
Mustapha recently left the ruling party and moved to the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general elections. His decision has now been followed by a number of party officials in his ward, with 12 executives choosing to leave the APC.
Among those who resigned are the ward chairman, Aliyu Abdulhakeem, and the secretary, Abdulwaheed Adanla. Both officials submitted separate resignation letters to the APC leadership in Ilorin East Local Government Area on Friday.
Ten other members of the ward executive later submitted a joint resignation letter, bringing the total number of departing officials to 12.
The officials included the ward treasurer, auditor-general, legal adviser and assistant auditor-general. Other positions affected were assistant treasurer, assistant youth leader, assistant women leader, assistant secretary, assistant financial secretary and assistant organising secretary.
The mass resignation came within a short period of Mustapha’s exit from the APC and appears to reflect the political changes taking place around the senator ahead of the 2027 elections.
Abdulhakeem, who had served as the ward chairman, also gave up his position and party membership. He said his decision was based on personal reasons after considering his position within the party.
He expressed appreciation to members, party leaders, elders and other stakeholders who supported him during his time as chairman.
Adanla also resigned as ward secretary and ended his membership of the APC. He stated that he had considered the decision before formally communicating his withdrawal from the party.
The former secretary also indicated his readiness to return party documents, records, stamps and other materials belonging to the APC that were in his possession.
The latest resignations followed Mustapha’s formal decision to leave the APC.
The senator had submitted his resignation letter to the party leadership in Gambari Ward 1 after consultations with supporters, constituents and other political stakeholders.
Mustapha subsequently joined the PDP and secured the party’s ticket to contest the Kwara Central senatorial seat again in the 2027 general election.
His movement has created a new political situation in Kwara Central, with his supporters and some former APC officials now expected to work with the PDP as preparations for the next election gather pace.
The decision by the 12 ward executives to leave the APC could also trigger further movement within the party, although it is not yet clear how many other officials or supporters may follow the same path.
With the 2027 election approaching, the development is expected to add to the political competition in Kwara Central and could affect the strength of both the APC and PDP in the area.
