The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed 11 establishments in Agege and Mushin areas of Lagos State for failing to comply with environmental regulations.
The enforcement operation was carried out on Tuesday after the affected establishments were given several warnings and notices to correct the environmental problems linked to their activities.
According to the agency, the businesses and organisations were also given opportunities to meet the required standards but failed to take the necessary steps.
LASEPA said the action was part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to enforce environmental laws, protect public health and improve living conditions across the state.
The agency said establishments that continue to ignore environmental rules would face enforcement measures.
Six of the sealed establishments are located in Mushin. They include Akorohunfayo Central Mosque on Akorohunfayo Street, Fadeyi, which was shut over noise pollution.
Holy Temple of Christ on Ayetoro Street, behind NIPCO Filling Station, Mushin, was also sealed because of noise pollution. Christ Covenant Gospel Church, Western District, along Ikorodu Road, Fadeyi, and Christ Apostolic Church, Oye Iyanu, at Mushin Road, Church Bus Stop, Itire, were equally affected over noise-related violations.
Biolarique Bakery Academy on Mushin Road, Mushin, was sealed for failing to comply with directives issued by LASEPA. Tiles & Marbles on Silver Street, Olorunsogo, Mushin, was shut over air pollution.
The agency also sealed five scrap yards operating in Agege and Mushin.
The facilities were found to have committed different environmental offences, including operating without evidence of an E-Waste Permit, causing environmental pollution and failing to follow directives issued by the agency.
The affected scrap yards include Abubakar Scrap at Pipeline, Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege; Benjamin Scrap Yard on Ladoje Street, Oko Oba, Agege; Starlas and Sons Scrap Yard, also on Ladoje Street, Oko Oba, Agege; Jamin Scrap Yard at Jungle Bus Stop, Iju Road, Agege; and another Scrap Yard located on Olu Aina Street, Daleko, Mushin.
LASEPA General Manager, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, said the agency would continue to monitor activities across Lagos and take action where environmental rules are ignored.
He said the agency’s work was aimed at protecting residents from activities that could harm public health or damage the environment.
Ajayi urged business owners, operators of facilities, religious organisations, scrap dealers and other residents to follow environmental requirements and obtain the necessary permits and approvals for their operations.
He also called on residents and operators to maintain responsible environmental practices and cooperate with LASEPA during inspections and compliance exercises.
The agency said regular monitoring and enforcement would continue across different parts of Lagos as the government works to maintain a cleaner and safer environment.
