Three people, including a pregnant woman, a nursing mother and her daughter, have been killed after lightning struck a room in Gambiri village, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 5:29 p.m. on Monday, August 17, 2026, when lightning struck the room where the victims were staying.
A resident of the community, Abubakar Hussain, told Daily Trust on Thursday, August 20, that the victims were buried at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
Hussain identified the deceased as Hauwa Juli, who had given birth just seven days before the incident, her daughter, Fatima, and Habiba, who was pregnant and said to be Hauwa's sibling.
However, the newborn baby survived the lightning strike.
“One miraculous thing that happened is how Almighty Allah has protected the newborn baby of Hauwa Juli from the calamity,” Hussain said.
The tragic incident has thrown the community into mourning, with residents said to be deeply shocked by the sudden loss.
Hussain added that economic and social activities in the area were disrupted as residents mourned the three victims.
The spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, it is true that a thunderstorm has killed three people in Gambiri village,” he said.
