A 34-year-old man, identified as Rabiu Mukthar, has allegedly opened fire at a neighbour’s wedding ceremony in Kano State, killing one person and injuring four others.
The incident reportedly occurred last weekend in Tudun Yola Quarters, within the Kano metropolis.
According to eyewitnesses, Mukthar was angered by the loud music at the wedding, which he allegedly claimed prevented him from sleeping.
The celebration was thrown into chaos after gunshots suddenly rang out, forcing guests, residents and other well-wishers to flee for safety. The bride and groom were also said to have escaped from the scene during the confusion, while nearby residents locked themselves indoors.
The spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect allegedly emerged from his house armed with a pump-action gun and fired repeatedly into the gathering.
Police officers reportedly responded swiftly after receiving a distress call, arresting Mukthar and another individual. The firearm allegedly used in the attack was also recovered.
During interrogation, Mukthar allegedly told investigators that he acted out of anger over the loud music, claiming the wedding organisers failed to consult neighbours and that the noise had disturbed his sleep.
The police spokesperson said one victim died from the attack, while four others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The suspects remain in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department as investigations continue.
