Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has urged opposition parties to focus on President Bola Tinubu’s performance in office rather than his academic certificates as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather pace.
Ndume, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and senator representing Borno South, made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.
He said the renewed debate over Tinubu’s academic records was taking attention away from issues that should form the basis of the next presidential campaign.
According to him, opposition presidential candidates should explain their plans to Nigerians and present alternatives to the policies of the Tinubu administration instead of making the President’s certificates a major campaign issue.
Ndume said the opposition should question the government’s economic policies, efforts to tackle insecurity and its overall record since taking office in May 2023.
His comments came amid renewed questions over Tinubu’s educational records after it was observed that the sections for primary and secondary school education were left blank in the EC9 form submitted by the President.
Tinubu listed a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, obtained in 1979. He also attached his degree certificate and National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate to the document.
Ndume maintained that Tinubu had satisfied the educational requirement for the presidency under the 1999 Constitution.
He referred to Section 131(d), which requires a presidential candidate to be educated to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.
The former Senate Leader also argued that questions surrounding Tinubu’s qualifications had already been dealt with by the courts following the 2023 presidential election.
He urged opposition parties to move away from what he described as personal attacks and focus on policies and issues that directly affect Nigerians as the 2027 election approaches.
Ndume said political candidates should provide clear answers on how they would improve the economy, tackle insecurity and deliver better governance rather than allowing the election debate to centre mainly on the President’s educational records.
He added that the opposition had an opportunity to present Nigerians with a clear alternative to the current administration as political campaigns intensify.
