Nigerian National Arrested As Authorities Seize Suspected Meth, Heroin At Vietnam Border.

A Nigerian national, Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, has been arrested in connection with an alleged transnational drug trafficking operation involving the movement of suspected narcotics from Laos into Vietnam.

Authorities said approximately two kilogrammes of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected bricks of heroin were recovered from a consignment intercepted at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Vietnam's central Quang Tri Province.

The Customs Sub-Department of Region IX disclosed in a statement on Monday, August 17, 2026, that the suspected drugs were discovered during an inspection of vehicles entering Vietnam from Laos.

According to authorities, customs officers detected suspicious images in a package during a scan conducted at about 8:30 p.m. on August 5.

A subsequent physical inspection of the consignment allegedly uncovered the suspected narcotics concealed inside electric water heaters and electronic components used as disguises.

Suspecting that the case involved an international drug trafficking network, the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX launched an investigation in collaboration with other security agencies, including customs officers at the Lao Bao International Border Gate, police, anti-smuggling operatives and border guards.

After several days of tracing the package and monitoring its movement across different locations, law enforcement officers reportedly arrested Odionye, who was born in 1983, on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Authorities alleged that he was arrested while receiving the package containing the suspected drugs.

According to investigators, Odionye allegedly admitted that the consignment contained narcotics and claimed that he had been hired to receive it in Ho Chi Minh City before transporting it to Hanoi.

The authorities said investigations had been expanded to identify and apprehend other individuals who may be connected to the alleged trafficking operation.
