Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has described the outcome of the Osun State governorship election as proof that voters can overcome attempts to manipulate electoral outcomes.
Utomi, in a statement shared on his verified X handle on Sunday, commended Osun voters following the declaration of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, secured 511,067 votes after winning in 19 Local Government Areas to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes across 11 LGAs.
Reacting to the outcome, Utomi wrote: “Nigeria we hail thee. So the people triumphed in the state of Osun.
“Like in Kano in years before, the people proved that their will can triumph over the forces of rigging.
“Massive turnout and a fighting spirit can save democracy. On to 2027 in confidence.”
The academic’s comments come amid commendations from several individuals and civil society organisations over voter participation and vigilance during the Osun election.
Utomi also urged Nigerians to carry the same determination into the 2027 general elections, expressing optimism that strong voter participation and civic engagement could help strengthen the country’s democratic process.
