The Edo State Police Command has arrested 15 suspects in connection with two separate attacks on security personnel in Ewatto and Sobe communities in the state.
Four suspects were arrested over the fatal attack on an Edo State Security Network (ESSN) personnel in Ewatto, Esan South-East Local Government Area, while 11 others were detained in connection with an attack on security operatives in Sobe.The command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikhoedem, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, 24 August 2026.
According to the statement, the Sobe incident occurred on Sunday after one Ojo Gabriel of Atoruru Village reported an assault and malicious damage at the Sobe Police Division.
Gabriel reportedly alleged that youths had damaged the windows of his residence and vehicle, prompting the deployment of police detectives and personnel of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) to the area.
Ikhoedem said the youths attacked the security personnel upon sighting them, damaging the side window of a police patrol vehicle and assaulting members of the ESSC.
Two locally made single-barrel guns belonging to the security personnel were also reportedly taken during the confrontation.
Three ESSC personnel — Tunde Ali, Izedu Monday and Charles Ighororo — sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment, according to the police.
The command said three unidentified youths also sustained pellet injuries during the confrontation, with one of them later dying while receiving treatment at David and Stella Hospital, Sabongida-Ora.
His remains were deposited at Heavenly Home Mortuary, Sabongida-Ora, while efforts were ongoing to establish his identity and locate his family.
The police said 11 suspects had so far been arrested in connection with the Sobe incident and that the two stolen firearms had been recovered.
Security has since been reinforced in the area with the deployment of additional police and military personnel, while normalcy has been restored, the command said.
Four Arrested Over Ewatto Attack
The command also reported a separate attack on an ESSN operative, Martins Enahoro, in Ewatto at about 12.20pm on Sunday.
According to the police, Enahoro was attacked by suspected members of the Aro Berger confraternity, including individuals identified as Gbozia and Gezo, among others.
The operative reportedly sustained multiple cut injuries and was taken to God’s Will Hospital, Ewohimi, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
His remains were deposited at a mortuary pending further investigation.
The police said four suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Two of those arrested reportedly confessed to belonging to the Vikings and Aiye confraternities, the command said.
All the suspects have been transferred to the Area Command Headquarters for further investigation, while efforts are continuing to apprehend other suspects who fled the scene.
The Police Mobile Force, Squadron 82, has also been deployed to the area as reinforcement.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Patrick Daaor, condemned the attacks on security personnel and urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
Daaor appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could assist the ongoing investigations.
“The command warns that attacks on security personnel are criminal offences and will not be tolerated,” he said.
He added that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that anyone found culpable was brought to justice.
