Police Arrest 32-Year-Old Man Over Alleged Murder Of Friend In Anambra.

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, identified as Ifeanyi Nwankwo, over the alleged murder of his 56-year-old friend, Kelechi Madu, in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command received a report from the deceased’s wife on 18 August that her husband had left home on the evening of 17 August and had not returned.

According to Ikenga, police operatives, working with members of a local vigilante group and the deceased’s family, immediately began inquiries and a search operation to determine his whereabouts.

He said the deceased’s wife later returned to the police station in distress after her husband was found dead in a nearby bush at Umuobi, Awkuzu.

“Police operatives immediately mobilised to the scene, where the deceased was found lying lifeless with a deep axe cut to his head,” Ikenga said.

He added that the body was evacuated and deposited at a hospital for preservation.

Ikenga said police arrested Nwankwo during the investigation and that the suspect allegedly confessed to being involved in the planning and killing of Madu.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly obtained money fraudulently from the deceased under the guise of assisting him to acquire a piece of land,” he said.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspect allegedly hired two other people to kill Madu in an attempt to conceal the alleged fraudulent transaction and suppress the money he had obtained from the deceased.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the investigation be intensified to identify and arrest all those allegedly involved in the conspiracy and murder.

The police said the investigation is ongoing.
