Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has responded to critics who accused her of leveraging the marital crisis involving her husband’s nephew, Yul Edochie, and his estranged wife, May Edochie, to grow her presence on social media.
In a lengthy post shared on her Instagram page, the actress dismissed the claims and insisted that she had built a significant social media presence long before the controversy surrounding the Edochie family.
Edochie, however, acknowledged that her association with May had given her platform an additional boost, saying she was proud to have benefited from what she described as May’s “beautiful grace.”
“Queen May Yul Edochie has been the foundation of this journey,” she wrote.
The actress said she had no problem admitting that May’s popularity had contributed to the growth of her page, arguing that there was nothing wrong with embracing and associating with someone she considered admirable.
She maintained, however, that it would be unfair to attribute the entirety of her social media growth to the ongoing family controversy.
“Much as I have always been relevant and visible enough on social media long before this moment, go back to my page dating from 2015 upwards,” Edochie wrote, insisting that her history on the platform demonstrated years of work and audience-building.
The actress also took a swipe at critics who, according to her, had attributed her growth to another unnamed woman involved in the controversy.
She rejected the suggestion and described such an assertion as disrespectful to the work she had put into building her online presence.
Edochie further stated that May’s influence had provided an “extra push” but maintained that she had been active and relevant on social media before the current controversy surrounding the Edochie family.
“Yes, Queen May’s grace gave me an extra push, I will say it with my full chest,” she said, adding that she had “no shame” in associating with May.
The actress urged her critics to consider the history of her social media activity before making claims about how she built her audience.
“Don’t just open your mouth because you want to talk. The history is there for everybody to see,” she said.
Her comments come amid continued public interest in the strained relationship between Yul Edochie and May Edochie, which has generated considerable discussion on social media.
