Russian media reports said Indeykin may have been bitten by an infected mosquito while in Nigeria. He reportedly travelled to Uzbekistan after leaving Africa, where symptoms of the illness began to emerge.
His condition later deteriorated after he returned to Russia, leading to his admission to a hospital in Perm. Despite efforts by doctors to save him, he reportedly died from the illness.
FIDE confirmed Indeykin’s death in a statement shared on social media, describing it as the result of a sudden illness.
Indeykin had been involved in FIDE events since 2021 and played a key role in organising major international chess tournaments, including World Championships, World Cups, World Rapid and Blitz events and Candidates Tournaments.
He also worked on championships for senior, junior and amateur players, travelling extensively to ensure tournaments were organised according to FIDE standards.
FIDE described him as a reliable professional and a kind-hearted individual who supported an orphanage and often returned from international trips with chess memorabilia and gifts for children.
The organisation expressed its condolences to his wife, young daughter, family, friends and colleagues, saying he would be greatly missed.
