Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inspected the Festac-Alakija Bridge following reports of vandalism on parts of the major road structure.
Sanwo-Olu visited the bridge on Saturday to see the level of damage and assess its current condition. He was accompanied by contractors responsible for the bridge, members of the Lagos State Executive Council and some local government chairmen.
The inspection followed the discovery that suspected vandals had damaged parts of the bridge and removed some of its reinforcing steel materials.
After examining the affected sections, the governor assured residents that the bridge was still structurally safe. He also warned those involved in the vandalism that the state government would take legal action against them.
Sanwo-Olu also warned people who buy stolen government property to stop encouraging the destruction of public infrastructure. He said those found involved, including those who purchase materials taken from the bridge, would face the law.
The governor had earlier directed security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the damage. The directive came after a video showing parts of the bridge in a damaged condition circulated online.
The footage showed sections of the concrete structure broken open, with reinforcing steel bars reportedly removed. The damage was linked to suspected scavengers who allegedly targeted the bridge for materials that could be sold.
The Festac-Alakija Bridge is an important link between Festac Town and the Alakija area and is used by many residents and motorists in the area.
Following the governor's directive, security agencies reportedly arrested at least 27 suspected hoodlums in connection with the vandalism.
The arrests are expected to assist investigations into how the bridge was damaged and identify others who may have been involved in removing or purchasing materials taken from the government facility.
The Lagos State Government has continued to warn residents against damaging public infrastructure, saying such acts can put the lives of road users at risk and create additional costs for government.
Sanwo-Olu's inspection was aimed at getting a clear picture of the situation and reassuring residents that the bridge remained safe for use while efforts to prevent further vandalism continue.
