The wife of late veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, broke down in tears on Monday as the actor was laid to rest in Ilaro, Ogun State.
The emotional moment occurred during the burial ceremony as relatives, friends, colleagues and other mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the 66-year-old Yoruba film star.
A video from the burial ground showed one of Ogogo’s wives crying while several women around her tried to comfort her.
The scene reflected the grief among members of the actor’s family as they prepared to say goodbye to him.
Ogogo’s remains were also seen being carried towards the burial ground as the family conducted the funeral according to Islamic traditions.
The actor’s close friend and colleague, Yinka Quadri, was also overcome with emotion at the ceremony.
He was seen crying while other mourners consoled him.
Several well-known Nollywood actors travelled to Ilaro to attend the burial. Among them were Jide Kosoko, Faithia Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Madam Saje, Mr Latin and Toyosi Adesanya.
Other actors and colleagues, including Ireti Osayemi and Bisi Omo Logbalogba, were also present at the ceremony, alongside members of Ogogo’s family and other sympathisers.
The burial came after a lying-in-state ceremony held earlier on Monday in Ilaro, the actor’s hometown. The Muslim community in the town also organised prayers for the deceased before his remains were taken to the burial ground.
Ogogo’s death was announced after he passed away at about 3pm on Sunday at the age of 66. Veteran actor Jide Kosoko had earlier informed the public that the actor’s remains would be taken to Ilaro for the funeral rites.
The death came shortly after Ogogo’s daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for help over their father’s health condition. The actor had reportedly been battling stage-four cancer and had been receiving medical treatment.
The family had earlier disclosed that doctors told them chemotherapy could no longer continue because of the seriousness of his condition. This led them to explore other possible treatment options before his death.
Ogogo was one of the respected names in Yoruba-language cinema and spent more than four decades in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
During his long career, he appeared in hundreds of films and built a strong reputation through his roles in Yoruba movies. His work made him a familiar face among generations of Nigerian film lovers and earned him a lasting place in the country’s film industry.
His burial in Ilaro brought together members of his family, fellow actors and other mourners who gathered to honour the actor and accompany him on his final journey.
