Tinubu Shades Aregbesola, Nickname Him Half Salary Politician In Osun.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revived the “Half Salary” nickname associated with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola while criticising former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to restore fuel subsidies if elected president in 2027.Tinubu made the remark on Thursday, August 20, 2026, while receiving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 governorship election.

The president was responding to Atiku’s reported proposal to reinstate fuel subsidies, arguing that such a policy would demonstrate a lack of understanding of governance and the economy.

“I saw one of my opponents (Atiku Abubakar) now say he will go back to subsidy. I read it,” Tinubu said.

He argued that the previous subsidy regime had placed significant pressure on state governments and contributed to difficulties in meeting salary and pension obligations.

“That is a demonstration of a serious ignorance on governance and economy. Before I came here, 27 states were unable to pay salaries, not to even talk of pensioners, salary of workers,” the president said.

Turning to Osun State, Tinubu referred to Aregbesola, a former ally who served as governor of the state from 2010 to 2018.

“In your state, I know a man that I raised who is nicknamed half salary,” Tinubu said.

Aregbesola, who is now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), became associated with the “Half Salary” label during his tenure as governor after his administration faced difficulties paying full salaries to civil servants.

Tinubu’s reference to the nickname comes amid renewed political alignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with former allies and opposition figures positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
