A video showing billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu cautioning a young woman who addressed him by his first name at a public function has gone viral on social media.Elumelu and the woman were attending a conference where the businessman opened the floor for questions from guests.
The woman stood up to ask a question and began by saying, “Good morning, Tony.”
Elumelu appeared startled and asked whether she had said “Toyin”.
The woman clarified that she had said, “Good morning, Tony.”
Responding, the businessman told her that she should not address him by his first name, adding that he does not subscribe to what he described as “Oyibo life”.
He suggested that she could instead address him as “Mr Elumelu”, “TOE” or “Chairman”.
“No, you wouldn’t call me Tony. I am not one of those… You call me Mr Elumelu or TOE or Chairman. I don’t subscribe to that kind of Oyibo life,” he said.
The exchange has since attracted reactions on social media, with users sharing and commenting on the video.
