Two people have been confirmed dead following an attack at an IMAX cinema in Lekki, Lagos State, on Friday night, August 29, 2026.
The incident occurred after a machete- and knife-wielding man reportedly attempted to gain entry into the cinema premises but was stopped by security guards.
Eyewitnesses said the assailant appeared to be under the influence of drugs during the incident.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said the suspect, who appeared to be destitute, allegedly stabbed one of the security guards to death and injured another.
She said the assailant was subsequently mobbed, resulting in his death.
The police spokesperson added that the cinema’s Chief Security Officer had been taken into custody as authorities commenced investigations into the incident.
According to her, police are also working to obtain and review CCTV footage from the premises to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify any other persons who may have been involved.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
