The University of Ibadan (UI) has introduced an alternative admission route for qualified candidates who could not secure places through its regular on-campus programme because of limited admission quotas and inadequate physical space.
The institution said the opportunity is available through its Open, Distance and eLearning (ODeL) programme, giving candidates who participated in the university’s Post-UTME screening another chance to gain admission and study for a UI degree.
The university made this known through its Distance Learning Centre (DLC), which announced that applications for the special 2025/2026 academic session will close on August 15, 2026. The special cohort is expected to begin classes on August 17.
The Director of the UI Distance Learning Centre, Prof. Olufade Onifade, said candidates who took part in the university’s Post-UTME examination can move from the regular on-campus option to the ODeL programme without paying a change-of-mode fee.
He explained that the programme allows students to attend virtual classes and use mobile learning platforms, interactive study materials and physical revision sessions as part of their academic activities.
According to the university, students under the ODeL programme are taught by faculty members who also teach conventional students. Successful candidates will also receive University of Ibadan degrees after completing their programmes.
The distance learning option covers several first-degree courses across different fields. Available programmes include Computer Science, Statistics, Psychology, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, English, Communication and Language Arts, Educational Management and Social Work, among others.
The university also stated that candidates who participated in the 2026 UI Post-UTME exercise are qualified for the free change-of-mode opportunity.
Such candidates are expected to access the university’s official change-of-mode application portal and move their application from the conventional mode to the ODeL programme.
The institution added that candidates who did not participate in the Post-UTME exercise but meet the required conditions can also apply afresh for the special ODeL cohort.
UI advised eligible candidates to complete their applications before the August 15 deadline, noting that the number of available places for the special cohort is limited.
The university said the ODeL programme is aimed at expanding access to university education by allowing qualified candidates to study without being restricted by the number of available physical classrooms and conventional admission spaces.
