Use Water-Based Lubricants, Not Palm Or Vegetable Oil, Health Expert Advises Nigerians.

A Senior Manager for Prevention Programmes at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Taofeek Adeleye, has warned Nigerians against using palm oil, vegetable oil and other oil-based substances as lubricants during sexual activity.

Adeleye gave the warning while speaking at a national training for media personnel on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis in Lagos on Thursday, August 20.

He cautioned against the use of household substances and other oil-based products as lubricants, advising sexually active individuals to opt for appropriate water-based lubricants instead.

“You can’t use palm oil, honey oil, balsamic, or vegetable oil. You can use water-based lubricants, which are advisable,” he said.

Adeleye also spoke about the use of saliva where a suitable lubricant was unavailable, advising that individuals should be cautious about using saliva from another person.

“And if you want to use saliva, it is advised that, in the absence of lubricant, the woman should use her own saliva, knowing fully well that the saliva is coming from her and going back into her, rather than using saliva from a foreign source,” he said.

The health expert further urged sexually active persons to ensure that they use condoms that fit properly.

“Two or three condoms—you will know the one that fits you. When you try them and don’t know which one fits your size, you ask,” he added.

The training focused on HIV prevention, including the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, also known as PrEP, and other measures aimed at reducing the risk of HIV transmission.
