Former Super Eagles captains Jay-Jay Okocha and John Obi Mikel have revealed the fascinating stories behind the names that became synonymous with their successful football careers.
The two Nigerian football legends shared the stories during a conversation on the Obi One Podcast, explaining how “Jay-Jay” and “Mikel” eventually became their recognised names.
For Okocha, the famous “Jay-Jay” nickname was originally associated with his younger brother, James, who was the actual “Jay-Jay” in the family.
The former Nigerian captain explained that the nickname developed while they were growing up, when several members of the family were involved in football.
According to Okocha, his full name, Augustine Okocha, was sometimes difficult for people outside Nigeria to pronounce after he travelled abroad, making “Jay-Jay” a much easier alternative.
“Well, I think it started all in the neighbourhood where we grew up. You know, all of us were footballers because we had no other toys. We were just on the street playing.
“And my two brothers played as well, so we had a few Austins. So, to identify which Austin was which, they started calling me Austin Jay-Jay’s brother.
“So, from there, Austin Jay-Jay stuck. So, when I travelled, some people were struggling to pronounce my name, ‘Augustine’. So, ‘Jay-Jay’ was a lot easier. So, I said I might as well adopt the name, and I put it in my passport. Yeah, it’s in my passport now. It’s officially mine.”
Mikel, on his part, revealed that his famous name resulted from an administrative error during an Under-17 tournament.
According to the former Chelsea midfielder, he submitted his name as “Michael” when players' names were being prepared for their jerseys. However, the name was mistakenly printed as “Mikel”.
Rather than correct the error, the former Super Eagles captain said he decided to keep the new version because he preferred how it sounded.
“That’s like me as well. I changed my name. You remember the story? At the Under-17 tournament, when they went to print the names, I gave them Michael. They came back with Mikel, and Mikel sounds better than Michael.
“I had a fantastic tournament. I was like, you know what? I’m just gonna keep it. Of course, I put it in my passport as well.”
The two former Super Eagles stars went on to become household names in Nigerian and international football, with “Jay-Jay Okocha” and “John Obi Mikel” now firmly etched in the history of the sport.
Their revelations have offered fans a rare insight into the unexpected stories behind two of the most iconic names in Nigerian football.
