Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has linked Nigeria’s lack of reliable electricity to the limited nightlife and recreational activities available to people at night.
Fayose argued that when electricity is unavailable, people are left with little to do after nightfall, forcing many to remain indoors and spend more time with their spouses.
He said, “When you don’t address this issue of electricity, the people at that level have no alternative attraction. Nothing else matters to them. After seven o’clock, it gets dark, everybody is engaging their wives and the population simply becomes double.
“The simple problem is because there’s lack of electricity. People go to bed early. Their mind is simply prepared that if this is the only available recreation, let me remain here.
“But when we address this electricity, there’ll be nightlife, there’ll be recreation outside your wife.”
Fayose’s remarks highlight the wider social impact he believes poor electricity supply has on Nigerians’ lifestyles and access to evening entertainment.
