A woman who was allegedly set ablaze by her son in Cross River State has died from injuries sustained in the attack.
The incident occurred on Friday, 14 August 2026, in Ojuah community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state. The deceased, identified as Mrs Atim Etim, was allegedly accused of witchcraft by her son, Emmanuel Etim, who reportedly blamed her for the death of his daughter.
It was gathered that Emmanuel travelled to his mother’s residence with about four litres of fuel and a lighter after his daughter died earlier that day.
He reportedly confronted his mother, accusing her of causing the child’s death and demanding to know what he had done to her to warrant such an act.
The situation reportedly escalated when Emmanuel stood up from his chair and attempted to strangle his mother.
As the woman raised an alarm, one of her daughters intervened and struggled with Emmanuel, forcing him to release their mother.
Atim reportedly attempted to flee, but her son allegedly poured fuel on her and set her ablaze.
Neighbours who witnessed the incident quickly intervened and put out the fire before taking the victim to a hospital for treatment.
She was later transferred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for further medical attention but died from her injuries.
The spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident and said efforts were ongoing to track and arrest the suspect, who is currently at large.
“Further information will be communicated to the public as soon as the suspect is apprehended and the facts of the matter are further established,” Eitokpah said.
