The incident was disclosed in a statement issued by the university’s Deputy Registrar, Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lapai on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
Akote said Magaji, a student of the Department of Public Administration, was struck by a stray bullet during the dispute and subsequently died from his injuries.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Sulaiman, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and associates.
Sulaiman described the incident as distressing and a painful loss to the entire university community.
He prayed for the repose of Magaji’s soul and asked Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
The vice-chancellor also appealed to the communities involved in the dispute to embrace dialogue, exercise restraint and prioritise peaceful coexistence.
He warned that resolving disputes through violence could result in further loss of lives and unnecessary bloodshed.
